The San Antonio Amputee Foundation understands how important it is that amputees have a voice. We strive to educate our community with resources, materials, and access to events like the Amputee Coalition's Limb Loss Education Days so that our members are well-equipped with information to manage and advocate for their own health and wellness.

 

​In 2008, our Founder, Mona Patel, helped lead a successful bipartisan grassroots effort to pass the Texas Prosthetic Parity Act. Working alongside hundreds of amputees, family members, caregivers, and advocates from across the state, we mobilized Texans to travel to the State Capitol—often with only a few days' notice—to share their stories and educate legislators on a simple truth: prosthetic limbs are not a luxury; they are a medical necessity. Together, we helped secure more equitable insurance coverage for prosthetic care.

 

Our advocacy continues today. In 2025, SAAF organized and transported 50 members to Austin to join fellow Texans in advocating for Medicaid coverage of prosthetic limbs for adults over age 21. While the legislation was not successful, our voices were heard, and the need remains urgent. Texas remains the only state in the nation that does not provide Medicaid prosthetic coverage for adults over 21. We remain committed to working with lawmakers and advocacy partners to advance this critical issue during the 2027 legislative session.

SAAF's advocacy efforts extend beyond Texas. In April 2026, Executive Director Mona traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with Texas Senators and Representatives to discuss key national issues impacting the limb loss and limb difference community, including access to prosthetic care, protection against fraud and abuse policies that limit patient access, and federal support for resources that improve the lives of individuals living with limb loss.

Through education, advocacy, and grassroots engagement, SAAF works to ensure that every person living with limb loss has access to the care, services, and opportunities they need to live independently and thrive.
